Foothills Quilters Guild Meet to Share Their Love of Quilting

Foothills Quilters Guild meets monthly at Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The members come together to share their love of quilting. They are here to learn, teach and encourage anyone who also shares that love. The group gladly welcomes new members from Shelby and surrounding areas.

The group truly believes in supporting Cleveland County through a number of community service projects. In 2023 they made and donated 143 quilts that went to Oncology patients at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute in Shelby, Wendover Hospice in Shelby and Foster children in both private and state run homes in Shelby.

Their pillowcase project is a major one for them. The 600 pillowcases shown in the pictures will soon go to Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. The quilts underneath the pillowcases will be given to Oncology patients in Shelby.

This is a year round project but the group manages to finish about 100 pillowcases during their annual two day Community Service Sewing Marathon. Every February they come together on a Friday and Saturday to finish as many projects as possible. Some members are piecing quilt blocks, others putting lap quilts together and still others are sewing pillowcases.

They distribute quilts throughout the year but the pillowcases they hold onto until after the Christmas holidays are over. They are then washed, ironed and delivered to Charlotte.

Projects like these are made possible by continued community support. This year the Guild was fortunate that Mountain Wash Laundry in Shelby donated their services to wash and dry all of their pillowcases. The group is grateful and can’t thank them enough for all the time and effort they put into this project.

The price of quality fabric has risen to $10-12 a yard. One pillowcase is 1 yard of fabric. They buy a lot of fabric! All of this wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the grant money received from the Dover Foundation and private individuals who contribute, like H&H Pest Control and Sandy’s Country Christmas.

In addition to these projects the group provided 115 kennel pads to Cleveland County Animal Shelter, 129 hats for newborns at Atrium Health Cleveland Shelby, 50 hats for women in Oncology and 68 port pillows for Oncology, Shelby. All this keeps them very busy.

Foothills Quilters Guild is a 501 (c) (3) Charitable Organization, and they gladly accept any donations.
